The honest pitch to the non-angler
Half of every taimen trip is the part that has nothing to do with fish: the drive north through the steppe, the ger camps and herder families, a river valley that was old when Chinggis Khaan was born beside it, cranes overhead, larch forests going gold. Anglers spend that trip staring at the water. Companions get to actually look at Mongolia. If your partner has a bucket-list fish and you have a bucket-list continent, this is the rare trip that serves both.
Built for mixed parties
Our weeks carry a maximum of ten guests, and the camp is set up for some of them to be non-anglers: the vehicle that leapfrogs camp each day can carry companions on valley excursions, camp staff include an English-speaking host, and the day’s rhythm — boats out after breakfast, everyone together by dinner — means a mixed party is never really split up.
Making a full itinerary of it
Most guests bookend the river week: two nights in Ulaanbaatar on arrival, the seven-day float, then an extension. The combinations that work best in September:
- Gobi Desert — flaming cliffs, dunes, and Three Camel Lodge
- Eagle hunters — the Kazakh west, with the autumn festivals shortly after our season
- Ulaanbaatar culture — museums, monasteries, cashmere, and serious restaurants
Tell us who is coming and what they love when you request your week, and we will build the whole route, not just the fishing.
Frequently asked questions
What does a companion's day look like at camp?
Slow mornings with coffee by the river, then whatever you want the day to be: riding into the valley with camp staff, birding and photography, a drive to Dadal's Chinggis Khaan sites, or a book in a camp chair while the boats fish past. Evenings everyone is back together for dinner and the fire.
How comfortable is the camp, really?
Expedition-grade comfortable: standing-height tents with real beds and warm bedding, a heated dining tent, chef-cooked meals, hot showers, and Starlink internet. It is a wilderness camp, not a hotel — but it is the luxury version of a wilderness camp.
Do companions pay the same price?
No. Non-fishing guests travel at a reduced rate since they use no rod slot or permit. Ask when booking and we will quote your party's exact configuration.
What extensions work best around a September week?
September is ideal for the Gobi — Three Camel Lodge is the benchmark stay — and it is eagle-festival season in the far west shortly after. Ulaanbaatar now has genuine five-star hotels for the city nights on either end. We arrange all of it as part of your booking.
